Department Information

There are 3 MFL lessons per fortnight on the timetable at KS3.

Students study French in Year 7 in mixed ability tutor groups.

In Year 8, students are put into sets according to their ability. They continue with French but we add Spanish as a 2nd language during the course of the year.

In Year 9, students continue to study 2 languages alternately. They can then choose to continue at GCSE level as an option if they wish.

In Year 10 & 11, there are 5 lessons per fortnight. There is a topic-based approach to teaching plus regular speaking practice and grammar exercises. Every half-term there is a Writing assessment / topic test.

Students are entered for either Foundation or Higher level exams, depending on their MLOs and other data. Foundation covers grades 1-5 and Higher grades 4-9.

MFL GCSE revision guides are available to buy on the school website via Scopay.

All students have access to www.linguascope.com for independent practice and for homework.

GCSE students also have access to a bank of listening material via the school website (MFL Student Downloads section)

Enrichment Opportunities

Whenever possible, we organise trips abroad. In previous years, there has been a visit to Cologne Christmas market for Year 9 students in December and 4-day visits to France, Spain and Germany for GCSE students. When we are updated on Covid restrictions for school travel, we will inform parents / carers of any planned trips.
